True History - Veritas Card #17 - The Twelve Tribes of Israel

The Twelve Tribes of Israel  Genesis 29-36, 46-50

God had made a promise to Abraham that he would be the father of many nations, and a great nation would come through one of his descendants. God gave Isaac to Abraham, when Abraham was well advanced in years. This was the son that God was going to use to become a great nation through.
Isaac then fathered two boys, Esau and Jacob. Although Esau was the firstborn son, Jacob was the one who received the birthright. So now we have Abraham, Isaac, and then Jacob, which were known as the Patriarchs.
Jacob became the father of twelve boys. God also changed Jacob's name to Israel. Each one of the sons became a tribe. They were known as the twelve Tribes of Israel. All of those descendants from the twelve tribes were called Israelites and they were God's chosen people. When this group of people obeyed God, they were fully blessed by God, and God took care of them. When they disobeyed God, He punished them. He treated this group of people like His own children.
The time period for this event was around 1860 B.C.
