Spies to Canaan - Joshua 2
After Moses died, Joshua became the Israelites new leader. God had raised him up to do a certain job. One of the first things he did was to send two spies across the Jordan River to gather information about the place called Jericho. Jericho was a walled city in the land of Canaan. The people who lived in Jericho were terrified of the Israelites as they heard about what God had done for them in Egypt. Word traveled fast, and that even without television or radio!
The leaders of Jericho found out about the two spies, they tried to capture them. But there was a woman named Rahab, who hid the spies so they would not be caught. The leaders who were trying to catch the two spies went to Rahab's house, but Rahab lied to the men and said that the spies were not there. She feared God enough to know that the two spies belonged to God, and she wanted the spies to protect her.
Rahab trusted in God and God took care of her. She was aware of the promises God made to Abraham concerning Canaan. She also understood that Canaan was now being given to the Israelites. So she hid the spies and protected them from being caught. She believed God's promises were true and her faith was evident.
God used the faith of this woman in many ways. God also protected her family from being destroyed when the Hebrews were taking over the land. She joined in with God's people, and actually became an ancestor to Jesus. This all took place around the time period of 1406 B.C.
