The Ten Commandments - Exodus 19-20
Most people have heard references to or were taught the 10 Commandments, but do we really know what they are or how they got here? Well around the time period of about 1445 B.C. (that means around 1445 years before Jesus was born) Moses was leading the Israelites out of Egypt to the Promised Land, the land God would allow them to own and settle in.
Remember there was a famine years before this that brought Jacob and his family into Egypt. They stayed there and had children. Their children had children and so on. Many years later Moses was born, and was leading the people back to the land they originally were coming from.
On the way to this Promised Land, the Israelites were camped in the area of Mount Sinai. God had called Moses to go up the mountain and He would talk with him. God gave Moses the 10 Commandments in order to show the Israelites how they should live. It would also show the people how much they needed God's help because they were unable to keep these laws. God wrote the Commandments in tablets of stone.
Here are the Ten Commandments (simplified):
1. You shall have no other gods before me.
2. You shall not make any graven or carved images (idolatry)
3. You shall not misuse God's name. Always keep it holy.
4. Remember to keep the Sabbath Day holy.
5. Honor your father and mother
6. You shall not kill (murder).
7. You shall not commit adultery.
8. You shall not steal.
9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor (tell a falsehood or lie).
10. You shall not covet.
On a scale of 1-10, how well would you score yourself on keeping the Ten Commandments? Now you can see why we have them. They help us see our need for a Savior.
