The Levitical Priesthood Begins - Numbers 3
Now we are in the book of Numbers. We are focusing on the tribe of Levi. The descendants of Levi would be the tribe of priests. God had given the Levites special tasks to do. One of the jobs the Levites were asked to do was to carry the Tabernacle and to serve as helpers to Aaron's sons. Some of the other jobs that the Levites were asked to do were to carry the Ark of the Covenant, and to take down the curtains. The Tabernacle, which was a tent, would have to be moved in a careful way.
Many years after this, the Temple of God was built. The Levites lived among the other tribes of Israel and they served at this Temple. Since the Lord was their inheritance, they did not have a special area of their own to live in.
The priest in the Old Testament was a foreshadow of what God would do in the New Testament. A priest is a person who stands between God and the people. The Old Testament told about a special Priest that would come one day. He would stand between God and the people and act as a mediator. That happened around 2000 years ago, when God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to come to the earth and live a perfect, holy life. He became our High Priest and we no longer need to have the priests that were descended from the Levitical tribe. Because Jesus is alive, He can act as a priest for us today.
The time period for the Levitical Priesthood was around 1440 B.C.
