Moses Dies; Joshua Assumes Command Deuteronomy 34
Around the same time period that Balaam's donkey talked to him, Moses was getting ready to take the people into the Promised Land, the land that God promised would belong to the Israelites. Moses was older now, probably around 120 years old! Moses did not believe God's Word in a situation, and because of that, God would not allow him to go into the Promised Land. But God allowed Moses to look over the land before he died. He climbed up Mount Nebo and saw all the land that was promised to the Israelites. Mount Nebo was across the Jordan River from the city of Jericho. Moses died after he saw the land, and God took his body and buried it.
There was a man named Joshua who was now the new leader of the Israelites. In fact, Joshua was one of the 12 spies that originally went into the Promised Land, and it was only he and another man who were brave enough to believe that God would truly give them the land.
Before Moses died, he stood with Joshua before the Israelites. He told the people that Joshua would now be the one leading them into the land. God had chosen Joshua to be the new leader.
Joshua's name means 'salvation'. When Jesus was born, the angel told Joseph that His name was to be called 'Jesus' because He would save His people from their sins. The Hebrew name Joshua, is the same name as Jesus. Joshua was like Jesus because he brought God's people into their promised blessing. Joshua trusted God and became a wise leader. He was full of wisdom and the Spirit of the Lord.
