Deborah the Prophetess - Judges 4 and 5
Can the victory really come from a woman? Here is how one woman was used to kill a mighty warrior and get the victory for her people.
The people of Israel were continually being tempted to go into idolatry. When they turned to another god, they would turn away from the one true God, and God would discipline them. He used people to oppress them, until they would turn back to God for help.
This time, a man named Jabin was the oppressor. He was the king of Canaan and the commander of his army was Sisera.
The Israelites were being oppressed, then they turned back to God and cried out to Him for help. God did something different this time. He used a woman to deliver Israel. Here is how it happened:
There was a leader in Israel named Barak. Deborah told Barak to attack Sisera's army, but Barack was hesitant to do that. He only wanted to go if Deborah would go with him. The Lord did not allow Barak to enjoy getting the victory, because he was not sure he could do it by himself.
Barak was the Israelites leader and while he was leading, Israel defeated the forces of Sisera. But Sisera got away, and escaped. He ended up at the tent of a lady named Jael, and she encouraged him to come inside the tent. Sisera trusted Jael, but Jael was thinking of a plan to kill him. Sisera fell asleep Jael took a tent peg and pounded it through his head. A woman killed this powerful warrior.
After that, Jael became a heroine in Israel, and Deborah wrote a song in honor of this great deliverance. In this song, Deborah tells the story of how Jael was used by God to win this victory. The song was full of praise to God and described His deliverance for Israel.
This event happened around 1350 B.C.
