Today in History - October 12, 1492 - Columbus Reaches the New World

Today in History - October 12, 1492 - Columbus Reaches the New World

Today was an eventful day in History. For example, Confederate leader Robert E. Lee dies in 1870, and Nikita Khruschev throws a temper tantrum at the United Nations by removing his shoe and pounding on a table in response to a speech that was critical of Soviet policy in Eastern Europe in 1960. Perhaps the most memorable event was when Columbus sailed the ocean blue, and landed on an island that was part of the New World, thinking he had finally reached India!

After sailing across the Atlantic Ocean, Italian explorer Christopher Columbus sights a Bahamian island, believing he has reached East Asia. His expedition went ashore the same day and claimed the land for Isabella and Ferdinand of Spain, who sponsored his attempt to find a western ocean route to China, India, and the fabled gold and spice islands of Asia.
