Israel Given the Promised Land - Joshua 21: 43-45; Judges 1:8-36
The Promised land was finally given to the Israelites. God was faithful to keep His promise to them. The reason they were able to have great victory was because the Lord God was with them. They did not win any victories because they had a lot of people in their armies or any great power or weapons. Their victory came right from God.
The Lord had commanded them to do many things, but like before, the Israelites were not faithful to do the things that God had told them to do. They were still disobedient. They failed to drive out or destroy the Canaanites as God had instructed them, and they also allowed the Canaanites to live among them! Not a good idea. This led to compromise for the Israelite people, and it had many bad effects that harmed them for years to come. The Canaanite people live in idolatry. That means they did not worship the true God, but they had other gods they trusted in. Idolatry is having a deep love or affection for something other than the one true and living God. The Israelites were now tempted to practice idolatry since the Canaanites lived among them. The Second of the Ten Commandments tells us not to make an idol for ourselves, and that is what the Israelites were being tempted to do.
There were twelve tribes of Israel, and one of those tribes, the tribe of Judah, stayed faithful to the one true God. They were faithful to drive out the Canaanites and rid the land that they were now living in, of the Canaanites. This tribe was more faithful to the Lord God than any of the other tribes. Also, this tribe was the one that a particular person was to come from as a descendant. Here is a Bible verse from Genesis 49:10 The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be. That person is Jesus Christ, God's Son, who came to live here on earth 2000 years ago. The time period for this was from around 1400-1350 B.C.
