Today in History - October 11, 1868 - Thomas A. Edison Files Papers for His First Invention

Thomas A. Edison filed papers for his first invention, an electrical voice recorder to speed the tabulation of votes in Congress. (Congress would reject it).

On a side note, I love to hear about Thomas A. Edison and what he did in History. The reason is that my grandmother, and her family, moved from the state of New York, to West Orange, NJ., in order to work for Thomas Edison at his laboratory, in the 1920's. I have a picture on the side of this blog page of the factory when we visited it last year. We were not able to get inside because it was not open, but we took a picture of the laboratories which were across the street. Up to the 1960's, right at noon, a horn would go off from the Edison Laboratories indicating lunch time. The Laboratory is in West Orange, New Jersey, and we could hear the horn in Orange, which wasn't all that far away. I love the memory of the horn because my grandmother was a great cook and it was time to eat when that went off. She made a great dish of baked macaroni and cheese!
The Edison Museum is located in West Orange, NJ., and is open to the public a couple of days during the week. There are people who stand around as guards preventing people from getting in when it is not open. The Laboratory is on Main Street and is very old and antiquated. I do not know if that building is open to the public.
