January 19, 1966 - Indira Gandhi Becomes First Female Prime Minister of India
After the death of Lal Bahadur Shastri, India's prime minister at that time , Indira Gandhi became head of the Congress Party, and as a result became Prime Minister of India. She was the first woman prime minister of this country. Not too long after this, she was challenged by the right wing of the Congress Party. She was beginning to lose favor with the people.
