Kings of Israel - 1 & 2 Kings, 1 & 2 Chronicles
On the last blog page, we learned about Solomon, who was known as the wisest man who ever lived, did not stay wise toward the end of his life. He married foreign women who worshiped pagan gods (idolatry) and he also supported them by building temples for these false gods. God was not pleased and He tore the kingdom in two parts now; Israel and Judah.
Judah ruled two of the tribes in the south, and Israel ruled the other ten northern tribes. Judah was more faithful to God than Israel. Judah was obedient in conquering the Canaanites in their region. Israel was more quickly corrupted by the pagans. Jeroboam, who was Solomon's servant, was the first king of Israel. None of the kings who ruled over Israel were righteous, therefore they went into captivity before Judah. Israel was conquered by Assyria when Hoshea was king.
There were a number of problems with the Northern Kingdom which caused it to fall. They became weak due to paying tribute to Assyria. Spiritual decay began to take place and political turmoil followed. There were also splits in the Northern Kingdom because men who were not kings claimed to be. This all took place from the years 931 B.C. through 722 B.C.
